La Salle survives FEU in five-set saga

By RENEE FOPALAN

The DLSU Lady Spikers survived a scare from the FEU Lady Tamaraws, escaping with a 25-22 25-17 24-26 23-25 15-7 victory on Wednesday to remain unbeaten in the UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament.

The Lady Spikers had to buck the inspired performance of a resilient FEU squad that battled from two sets down to force a winner-take-all fifth set.

FEU team captain Bernadette Pons paced the Lady Tams with 21 points off 20 kills, while Celine Domingo and Toni Rose Basas chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Jeanette Villarreal rounded up the FEU players in double figures with 10, as the Morayta-based squad countered every La Salle attack, edging the defending champions, 50-48, in attack points.

The Lady Archers went to their old reliables with Kim Dy pacing her squad with 18 markers off 15 attack points.

Team captain Majoy Baron added 16 off 14 kills, while Tin Tiamzon and Des Cheng scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

With virtually all things equal, the Lady Spikers capitalized on FEU’s errors, as the Lady Tams committed 46 to DLSU’s 28, enough to spell the difference.

With the win, DLSU tied NU atop the standings anew with identical 3-0 win-loss cards. FEU, meanwhile, have dropped their last two assignments after shocking Ateneo in their season opener. — BAP, GMA News
