PHL spikers fall in gallant 5-set stand against Vietnam


The Philippine women's national volleyball team put up a gallant stand against Vietnam before faltering,  25-21, 23-25, 19-25, 25-20, 8-15, in its 30th Southeast Asian Games volleyball competition opener at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig Tuesday.

An error from phenom Alyssa Valdez in the fifth set sealed the victory for Vietnam, 15-8.

The Nationals held a 22-19 cushion in the fourth frame before uncorking a quick 3-1 spurt, topped by  Valdez's combination play to force a decider.

With Vietnam at set point in the third canto, 24-17, Valdez fired back-to-back hits, before committing an attack error, 25-19.

While the Philippines dominated the services, 4-1, Vietnam's height made the difference with its 15-9 advantage in the blocking department.

Thi Thanh Thuy Tran exploded for 27 points, 13 digs and 13 receptions for Vietnam. Thi Xuan Nguyen and Thi Nga Bui added 15 and 14 markers, respectively.

Valdez spearheaded the Nationals with 22 points, while Ces Molina and Jovelyn Gonzaga added 12 markers apiece.

Majoy Baron had 10 points.

The Philippines will try to bounce back against powerhouse Thailand on December 5, Thursday, 6 p.m., at the same venue. —Ma. Angelica Garcia/JST, GMA News
