Coast Guard: Over 1,000 rescued; 11,000 others evacuated in Odette-hit areas

A total of 1,032 people were rescued while 11,890 residents were evacuated by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) in Typhoon Odette-stricken areas.

In a Facebook post on Monday, PCG reported that 367 were rescued in Northern Mindanao, 41 in Central Visayas, 124 in Western Visayas, and 500 in Palawan.

Meanwhile, 10,029 individuals were evacuated in Northeastern Mindanao, 367 in Northern Mindanao, 239 in Central Visayas, 600 in Western Visayas, 305 in Eastern Visayas, and 350 in Palawan.

“As of today, the PCG is focusing its efforts on conducting massive humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations through relief transport operations and ferry missions,” the agency noted.

Further, PCG responded to a total of 115 maritime incidents, 90 of which occurred in Central Visayas.

There were also 13 maritime incidents in Northeastern Mindanao, two each from Northern Mindanao and Western Visayas, and one in Eastern Visayas.

The Coast Guard said majority of these maritime incidents were vessels that “ran aground, became half-submerge, and reported allision.”

Several watercraft were also reported missing.

The PCG added that they are utilizing all available assets and resources of the national government per order of President Rodrigo Duterte for the recovery and rehabilitation of the affected regions. — Giselle Ombay/RSJ, GMA News
