A passenger gave birth aboard a northbound Light Rail Transit 1 coach in Manila early Wednesday morning, the LRT Authority said.

LRTA spokesman Hernando Cabrera said the baby boy was born at 6:25 a.m. as the train approached the Doroteo Jose station in Manila.

"Kanina mga 6:25, may pasahero na inabutan ng panganganak sa loob ng tren habang padating sa D. Jose," Cabrera said in an interview on dzBB radio.

He did not immediately name the mother but said she and the child were in good condition after they were rushed to a nearby hospital.

But he said the woman or the child are not likely to get any privileges given by some airlines, such as free rides for life.

"Ayaw namin ma-encourage ang kababayan natin manganak sa LRT. Hindi designed diyan ang LRT," he said.

Cabrera said the woman had planned to go to Fabella Hospital where she would give birth.

He said a Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. nurse, Maria Cecilia Lopez, and a female LRT guard he identified only as Manansala, assisted the woman.

"Based sa latest report ng guard natin na tumulong, magandang condition ang mag-ina," he said.

He said the birth did not affect the LRT's trip as it was early in the morning.

Last October, Cabrera said at least 14 babies have been born aboard the Light Rail Transit Line 1 since 2000, including on the platform of an LRT station and on a moving LRT coach.

He said the 14 include eight born on the platform and six in a moving train.
