Taguig to partner with business sector on bike facilities

The local government of Taguig will partner with the business sector to increase bike-friendly areas and facilities within the city amid the "new normal."

"The city will partner with the business sector to increase bike-friendly places and facilities, including protected lanes, showers and restrooms for cyclists, and bike racks," Taguig City government said in a press release.

"It will also seek workplaces that incentivize or subsidize workers switching to biking," it added.

The local government will also introduce biking to city hall employees, law enforcers and public health workers through a bike-lending program.

Recently, Taguig City launched a comprehensive bike program as biking was seen as an essential mode of transportation during the COVID-19 general community quarantine.

Bikers in the city meanwhile were grateful for the Laguna Lake Highway bike lane.

Cyclist Enrique Tija said the bike lane was a great help to him and his friends.

"Every Sunday, they would bike here to practice... Some people who also pass through here going to work avoid getting sideswiped by motorcycles and cars,” Tija said.

Launched in February 2019, the three-meter-wide stretch of road, which spans 5.8 kilometers, was the first protected bike lane along a Philippine national highway, a prototype for new roads and existing roads wide enough to accommodate a bike lane.

Taguig City recently renovated the said bike lane. — DVM, GMA News
