Court acquits 19 CIDG cops accused in ex-Albuera Mayor Espinosa's killing, says lawyer

The Quezon City Regional Trial Court on Wednesday acquitted the 19 members of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group in Region 8 accused in connection with the killing former Albuera, Leyte Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr.

According to a report on Super Radyo DZBB, defense lawyer Atty. Roland Inting confirmed that Judge Catherine Manodon of QC RTC Branch 104 acquitted the police officers accused in the homicide case.

The prosecution reportedly failed to prove the charges against the 19 accused.

Inting said the killing occurred at night and it was difficult to identify the suspects.

Espinosa was shot and allegedly killed by CIDG members during the service of a search warrant inside the Leyte Sub-Provincial Jail in Baybay City on Nov. 5, 2016.

The slain former mayor had been detained on drug charges.

Members of the CIDG Region 8, including its chief then Superintendent Marvin Marcos and Santi Matira have been relieved over the incident. -Richa Noriega/NB, GMA News
