The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday said owners of landfills have agreed to set up waste-to-energy plants to prevent these sites from getting full.

In a press conference, MMDA chairperson Benhur Abalos said that currently there is no problem with landfill sites in the region.

“I've been urging them para huwag mapuno ang ating mga landfill, magkaroon sila ng waste-to-energy plant..Halos lahat naman um-oo po sa akin,” he said.

Earlier, the Greenpeace Philippines opposed the use of waste-to-energy incinerators saying that they emit significant amounts of greenhouse gases that drive the climate crisis.

It added that the government should focus on ecological and safe solutions to manage waste and produce electricity. —KG, GMA News
