Campaign materials to be recycled into bags, bricks —MMDA

By JOVILAND RITA,GMA News

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Friday said campaign materials collected after the elections will be recycled into “ecobags” and “ecobricks”.

At the Laging Handa public briefing, MMDA chairperson Romando Artes said the environmental group Ecowaste Coalition reached out to the agency to create ecobags from the collected campaign materials.

“In fact, nagpulong na po sila ng aming mga tauhan para 'yung makakapal at magaganda pa po na tarpaulins ay magawa pong ecobags,” he said.

(The group already had a meeting with our personnel so they can make ecobags out of the tarpaulins with good quality.)

For thin tarpaulins, Artes said they will be shredded in a granulator and will be used as ingredients in creating hollow blocks and ecobricks.

These hollow blocks and ecobricks will be used in the pocket parks being developed in Metro Manila, he said.

“Ito po ay gigilingin at gagawing pong sangkap sa paggawa ng hollow blocks at ecobricks na siya naman pong gagamitin natin sa dini-develop po nating pocket parks dito sa Kamaynilaan,” he explained.

(These will be grounded and will be utilized as ingredients in the hollow blocks and ecobricks which will be used in pocket parks being developed in Metro Manila.)

A day after the May 9 national and local elections, the MMDA through its Operation Baklas collected 98 tons or 28 truckloads of campaign materials on Tuesday. On Wednesday, 154 tons or 43 truckloads of campaign materials were also collected.
