NAIA suspends operations briefly due to Red Lightning Alert

Flight and ground operations at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) are temporarily suspended due to the red alert raised by PAGASA on Thursday evening.

In an advisory,  the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said the Lightning Red Alert was raised at 10:58 PM.

“The alert is a safety measure taken to prevent untoward incidents from happening when lightnings is prevalent in the immediate area and may endanger personnel, passengers, and even flight operations,” MIAA said.

Before 1 a.m. on Friday, the MIAA announced that flight operations have resumed.

The announcement was made after PAGASA lowered the Red Alert Lightning Alert to Yellow as of 11:45 p.m. on Thursday.

PAGASA is currently monitoring Tropical Storm Karding as it continues to move over the Philippine waters.

Based on its latest bulletin, the weather bureau said the eye of the center of the tropical cyclone was located 1,320 kilometers east of Northern Luzon. It is slowly moving westward while packing maximum sustained winds of 65 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 80 km/h.

No storm signal was hoisted over any areas in the country but the tropical cyclone's passage may bring rains over Northern and Central Luzon beginning on Saturday evening or Sunday early morning, said PAGASA. -- BAP, GMA News
