The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Thursday said at least 1,010 motorcycle-related accidents were reported in Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City from January to August 2022.

At the public briefing, MMDA spokesperson Atty. Melissa Carunungan said of the 1,010 incidents, nine caused fatal injuries while 557 resulted to non-fatal injuries, and 444 resulted to damage to property.

She said the increase in the number of accidents and safety of the motorists were the main concerns in installing the motorcycle lane in Commonwealth Avenue.

The MMDA spokesperson said the target date for the installation of motorcycle lanes is by the end of November.

“There are other revisions that have to be made to the MMC resolution, and gusto rin po ng aming chairman magkaka-dry run din po ng implementation ng new road configuration sa Commonwealth Avenue,”  she said.

(And the chairman also wanted to have a dry run of the implementation of the new road configuration in Commonwealth Avenue.)

“After these requirements po, that’s when the MMDA will...ilalagay na rin po 'yung markings sa Commonwealth Avenue as well as the road signs after compliance with the requirements,” she added.

Carunungan said the third lane from the right of Commonwealth Avenue will be used for the motorcycle lane.

She said the MMDA is also studying the installation of motorcycle lanes in EDSA.

“So far 'yung pinag-aaralan pa rin ng MMDA ay ang EDSA. So ito po ay challenging kesa sa Commonwealth Avenue kasi po...mas masikip ang EDSA at mas maraming u-turn sa EDSA so pinag-aaralan pa po ng MMDA,” she added.

(So far the MMDA is still studying the installation of motorcycle lanes in EDSA. So this is more challenging than Commonwealth Avenue because EDSA is more congested and there are more u-turns in EDSA, so the MMDA is still studying it.)

In August, the MMDA said it is studying the adjustments it will make to motorcycle lanes.
