PNP eyes criminals raps vs. cop after son dies playing with his gun

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is looking into possible criminal complaints against a police personnel whose son died after playing with his service firearm, PNP spokesperson Colonel Redrico Maranan said.

“Sa ngayon tinitignan po ng ating PNP lawyers kung siya po ay makakasuhan ng criminal case (Right now, PNP lawyers are reviewing if he can be charged with a criminal case),” Maranan said at a televised public briefing.

“But definitely, yung administrative case ay siguradong gugulong po yan sapagkat nakikita natin papatak siya sa kasong administratibo na grave misconduct,” he added.

(But definitely, the administrative case of grave misconduct will certainly be pursued.)

The cop's 12-year-old son died last week after accidentally shooting himself with his father's service firearm which he brought to school in San Jose Del Monte City, Bulacan.

The child was playing with a 9mm Beretta when it suddenly went off.  He was immediately taken to the hospital but later died.

Maranan said the incident serves as a reminder to both police officers and the public to observe gun safety guidelines.—LDF, GMA Integrated News
