8 of 10 Pasay jail escapees rearrested —police

Eight of the 10 detainees who broke out of Malibay Detention Facility in Pasay City on Monday have been rearrested, Pasay City Police chief Police Colonel Froilan Uy said Tuesday.

Interviewed on Unang Balita, Uy said Romeo Estopa was captured in Pasay while Carlo Magno was rearrested in Imus, Cavite.

“Meron na lang tayong dalawang pinaghahanap. Hopefully makuha na atin ito. Si Norman Deyta at si Richard dela Cruz. Nakakawalo na po tayo sa mga oras na ito,” Uy said.

(We are only looking for two remaining detainees. Hopefully we can find them soon. They are Norman Deyta and Richard dela Cruz. We have rearrested eight detainees already.)

The two remaining detainees at large are facing cases for violation of the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

In an update on Monday evening, the SPD said another detainee John Michael Cabe was captured in Barangay San Dionisio, Parañaque City at 8:40 p.m.

The other rearrested persons under police custody (PUPCs) as of Monday evening were:

  • Joey Hernandez
  • Eden Garcia
  • Tirzo Galit
  • Joshua Panganiban
  • Christian Salvatierra
  • John Michael Cabe
  • Romeo Estopa y Marasigan
  • Carlo Magno Benavidez y Legaspi

Meanwhile, those who were still at large were:

  • Richard Dela Cruz (Violation of RA 9165)
  • Norman Deyta y Punzalan (Violation of RA 9165)

The police are offering a P100,000 reward for each of the escaped PUPCs.

The detainees escaped from the detention facility in Barangay 152 early Monday morning.

They managed to break the iron bar of the main facility at around 4:30 a.m. then mauled the duty jailer and took his service firearm, cash, and jail keys.

According to Uy, the jail guard was now in good condition although he had to undergo inquest for evasion by neglect due to the incident.

Malibay Police Sub-Station Commander Police Major Jerry Sunga and his deputy, meanwhile, have been relieved from their posts.

Following the incident, the detainees in Malibay were transferred to different detention facilities with more secure and better structures, Uy said.

Uy also ordered their investigation to check their inventory of cases and make follow-up on concerned judges to already issue a commitment order.

In a separate interview on Dobol B TV, Uy said Deyta led the jailbreak. Uy said Deyta was also the current "mayor" of the detainees.

Uy added that they are suspecting that the jailer’s gun is now in possession of Deyta.

Additional complaints will be filed against the escaped detainees, the official said.

SPD chief Police Brigadier General Kirby Kraft encouraged the public to coordinate with the nearest police station if they have information on the PUPCs.

“Maari rin po ninyo itong ireport sa mga numerong (You can also report to these numbers): 09568005277 (Globe), 09985987922 (Smart) PASAY TOC at DTOC sa numerong 09173661036,” he said. —KBK, GMA Integrated News
