DepEd: Transfer of EMBO schools from Makati to Taguig 'orderly'

By GMA Integrated News

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday said there was an “orderly transition” of the 14 public schools affected by the territorial dispute between the cities of Makati and Taguig.

DepEd said Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte, Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano, and Makati Mayor Abby Binay signed a Memorandum of Agreement for the full transition of the operations of the schools based in the enlisted men's barrios (EMBO) from Makati to Taguig starting January 1, 2024.

In August 2023, DepEd assumed authority over the 14 public schools

as the tensions brought about by the Supreme Court decision on the dispute was causing “uncertainty as to the peaceful and orderly reopening of schools on August 29, 2023.”

Back then, DepEd’s Office of the Secretary, headed by Duterte, directly supervised the schools, pending a transition plan.

Now that a full transition has already taken place, the Schools Division of Taguig-Pateros will manage and operate all the 14 EMBO schools, the DepEd said.

These schools are: Makati Science High School, Comembo Elementary School, Rizal Elementary School, Pembo Elementary School, Benigno “Ninoy” S. Aquino High School, Tibagan High School, Fort Bonifacio Elementary School, Fort Bonifacio High School, Pitogo Elementary School, Pitogo High School, Cembo Elementary School, East Rembo Elementary School, West Rembo Elementary School, and South Cembo Elementary School.

“While there are still specific issues and appeals that shall be left to the final determination of the proper authorities, the transition has been finally concluded through the collective resolve of the parties in ensuring the unhampered delivery of basic education services,” DepEd said in a statement.

The agency also recognized Regional Director Gilbert Sadsad and the members of the transition committee “for their perseverance and diligence throughout the entire process” of the transition period. —Giselle Ombay/KBK, GMA Integrated News
