Thieves in what looked like ride-hailing app uniforms strike in Rizal, Taguig

Two separate robbery incidents were caught on camera showing suspects wearing uniforms similar to those of ride-hailing app in Rizal and Taguig.

According to a "24 Oras" report by Jun Veneracion on Wednesday, CCTV footage showed the rider breaking into an SUV in San Mateo, Rizal.

The suspect was seen shining a flashlight into the vehicle before using a device to easily break open the car window and steal a laptop left inside.

“Yung bag ko po, may laptop 'yun lang naman po na identify ko na importante… Buti na lang dala ko ang wallet at cellphone with me,” said the victim.

San Mateo Police said it is looking into the incident.

“’Yang may gawa niyan, dati na niyang trabaho… Pagka na-identify namin ang plaka ng motor, mag request tayo [sa app] para sa identification ng suspek,” said San Mateo Police chief Police lieutenant Colonel Jonathan Ilay.

Meanwhile, an armed robbery was also reported in Barangay Pembo, Taguig involving a man in what looked like a ride-haling app get-up.

In CCTV footage, the suspect could be seen pointing a gun at the student victim, who fell on the ground.

Authorities said there have been reports of suspects wearing ride-hailing app uniforms to easily sneak through checkpoints. They said they intended to tighten their security measures.

The ride-hailing app companies involved based on the uniforms of the suspects have yet to issue statements as they are investigating the identity of the robbers. —Jiselle Anne Casucian/LDF, GMA Integrated News
