MANILA, Philippines - The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) will work for a culture of peace through citizenship building and solidarity in its Lenten social action program for 2009. In its website, the CBCP said the "Alay Kapwa," now on its 34th year, seeks to give an "offering to our neighbor as an expression of solidarity with the poor." "For many years already we as a country have experienced unrest," said Manila auxiliary bishop and CBCP Episcopal Commission on Social Action, Justice and Peace head Broderick Pabillo. Pabillo cited in particular the communist insurgency, the fighting in Mindanao and extra-judicial killings that remain unsolved. On the other hand, Pabillo also noted the need to change one's values, saying changing political leaders or the political system will not get the job done. "The parliamentary system will not better us, nor that change to federalism" as "changing the constitution will not guarantee a better state," he said. The CBCP said the program will encourage people to share their time, talent and treasure for the campaign. It will sustain social action initiatives on peace advocacy, democratic governance, ecology, sustainable agriculture, children's rights, disaster management and other development concerns. The program kicks off on Ash Wednesday on Feb. 25, with Bontoc-Lagawe Vicar Apostolic Emeritus Francisco Claver reflecting on "Citizenship Building and Solidarity." On the first Sunday of Lent on March 1, Fr. Carmelo Diola, overall coordinating steward of Dilaab Foundation Inc., will reflect on "A Good Christian is a Good Citizen." On the second Sunday of Lent, March 8, Tagbilaran Bishop Leonardo Medroso will speak on "Our Duty to Work." On March 15, Caloocan Bishop Deogracias Iñiguez Jr. will underscore the importance of "Justice and Social Solidarity." On the fourth Sunday of Lent, Boac bishop Reynaldo Evangelista will emphasize the need to recognize the "Integrity of Creation: A Common Responsibility." On March 29, Surigao Bishop Antonieto Cabajog will reflect on "Participation is a Duty." On Palm Sunday, or Alay Kapwa Sunday, Kidapawan bishop Romulo dela Cruz will contemplate on the importance of "Charity and Justice." On Easter Sunday, Pabillo will reflect on "Peace: Fruit of Justice and Love." - GMANews.TV
