Aside from deterring criminals, the Philippine National Police expects its visibility efforts in school zones to help prevent bullying as well.
PNP chief Director General Alan Purisima ordered the deployment of police units to areas where gangs are likely to gather, radio dzBB's Manny Vargas reported Tuesday.
The PNP chief said this aims to help school authorities prevent the harassment of students by local gangs and fraternities.
He particularly ordered the deployment of police teams in areas where rumbles and shakedowns involving bullies are known to occur.
But Purisima also appealed to parents to keep tabs on their children's activities, and report any indication of bullying to the school authorities.
They can also approach help desks to be set up in schools in the first week of school, he added.
