A typhoon from the east is not likely to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility but may enhance the Southwest Monsoon this week, state weather agency PAGASA said.

Typhoon Nangka was estimated at 1,700 km east of Luzon as of early Sunday, radio dzBB reported.

But while it is not expected to enter the PAR, there is a chance it could enhance the Southwest Monsoon (Habagat), which had brought heavy rain over parts of the country last week.

A dzBB report quoted PAGASA as saying the enhancing of the Southwest Monsoon could occur in the next three to four days.

Until then, PAGASA said the weather may improve in the coming days.

The Japan Meteorological Agency's 4 a.m. (PHL time) update said Nangka is moving west at 10 kph but indicated it may then veer northward.

Flood, landslide warnings

PAGASA earlier said Zambales province will experience rain which may trigger flash floods and landslides as the Habagat affects Luzon.

Mindoro, Bataan, Pangasinan, and Benguet will experience occasional rain, while Metro Manila and the rest of the country will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated thunderstorms.

Winds will be moderate to strong from the southwest over the entire archipelago with moderate to rough seas. — Joel Locsin/LBG, GMA News
