UN rapporteur to PHL: Make Kian's death the last

United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial Executions Agnes Callamard on Saturday urged the Philippines to make the death of Kian Loyd delos Santos the last in the war on drugs.

Delos Santos was laid to rest on Saturday afternoon after hours of funeral procession attended by hundreds of his supporters, who called for justice for the Grade 12 student.

Delos Santos' remains were buried in an apartment-type crypt at La Loma Cemetery in Caloocan City.

Delos Santos was killed in a police anti-illegal drug operation in Barangay 160, Caloocan City on August 16.

Callamard had said that the teenager's death was murder and said that "all unlawful deaths must be investigated."

Police claimed that Delos Santos drew a gun and fired at them while escaping, forcing them to fire back.

Police had claimed that the teenager was a drug runner.

Delos Santos' family, meanwhile, denied the police's allegations.

A CCTV footage also showed policemen carrying Delos Santos, belying their claim that the teenager took off during the operation.

Police Officer 3  Arnel Oares and Police Officers 1 Jeremias Pereda and Jerwin Cruz along with Chief Inspector Amor Cerillo, their commander at the Caloocan City Police Community Precinct Station 7, have been placed under restrictive custody and are now facing murder charges.

Caloocan City police chief Senior Superintendent Chito Bersaluna, on the other hand, has been placed under administrative relief to "preclude the possibility of his influence over the investigation of the incident."

Two of the three Caloocan cops admitted to police internal affairs investigators that they were the ones seen in the CCTV footage dragging Delos Santos on the day he was killed.

During the Senate hearing last Thursday, Cruz said that he and Pereda were indeed the ones caught on the CCTV footage. He, however, said that they were escorting a police asset and not Delos Santos.

During the week of Delos Santos' death, at least 90 drug suspects were added to the list of people killed in police anti-drugs operations.

The Senate has launched an investigation into the teenager's death and the killings of drug suspects during police operations. —ALG, GMA News
