British paper’s banner photo of Trump, Duterte says ‘hand in hand with a killer’

A British newspaper on Tuesday published a photo titled "Hand in hand with a killer" showing US President Donald Trump holding hands with President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Independent published the photo of Duterte and Trump on the front page.

The photo was taken during the first day of the 31st Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Meetings being hosted by the Philippines.

GMA News Online has sought presidential spokesperson Harry Roque for comment, but he has yet to reply.

Duterte has been widely criticized for the Philippines' bloody campaign against illegal drugs, which has resulted in thousands of deaths of suspected drug addicts and pushers.

Duterte also earlier admitted that he had stabbed a person to death when he was a teenager in a gang fight.

Trump is in the Philippines for the 31st Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and Related Meetings as a dialogue partner along with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, Chinese Premiere Li Keqiang, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In a joint statement, both leaders acknowledged that human rights and the dignity of human life are "essential."

The White House said following the bilateral meeting between the two leaders on Monday that human rights was briefly discussed in the context of the country's war on drugs.

The joint statement said Trump had committed to help the Philippines in addressing the drug menace. —Marlly Rome Bondoc and Trisha Macas/ALG, GMA News
