INTERNAL CLEANSING

PNP says 1,828 cops dismissed from 2016 to first half 2018

A total of 1,828 policemen out of more than 6,000 facing administrative charges were dismissed from service, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said on Thursday.

Of the 6,401 erring cops involved, 3,589 have been suspended, 362 were demoted, 403 were reprimanded, 147 were penalized with salary forfeiture, 43 have been stripped of their privileges, and 29 were restricted to quarters.

The data reflected results of the PNP’s internal cleansing from 2016 to the first semester of 2018, PNP spokesperson Senior Superintendent Benigno Durana said.

Those who were hit with administrative complaints were supposedly involved in criminal activities and cases, grave misconduct, serious neglect of duty, serious irregularity, malversation, dishonesty, and graft and corruption.

Illegal drugs

A total of 498 cops were probed for illegal drug-related cases, including 266 that tested positive of drug use and 232 were linked to drug activities.

The 261 uniformed and non-uniformed personnel who tested positive of drug use were dismissed from the service, while 92 who were involved in illegal drugs were also dismissed, the PNP said.

The police noted that 23 were suspended and nine were demoted for their involvement in drug-related activities.

The campaign against illegal drugs would still be effective as a “major factor” in reducing crime, Durana said. —Anna Felicia Bajo /VDS, GMA News
