Angara on Enrile’s take on Martial Law ‘history’: Don’t be obsessed about debate, focus on current issues

Senator Sonny Angara on Saturday urged the public not to be "obsessed" about  the debate on what actually happened during the Marcos Martial Law because he thinks it will unlikely get settled.

The senator opted for a balanced approach when asked on radio dwIZ about his thoughts on former Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile's remarks during a recent interview with former Senator Bongbong Marcos titled "JPE: A Witness to History," posted on the former's Facebook page.

"Lahat yan, kailangan pag-aaralan ng historian at hindi talaga tayo magkakaisa d'yan," Angara said.

"Let's respect each others opinion at let's focus on the future. 'Wag na nating pag-debatihan," he added.

"Hindi naman mawawala 'yung leksyon ng martial law."

Particularly,  Angara was asked to weigh in on Enrile's denial of claims that critics of then-President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. were killed or arrested during the dictatorial regime

The statement had drawn widespread flak from human rights advocates.

Angara emphasized that, although lessons from the past remain important, a more productive use of time would be to discuss current issues.

"Huwag na tayo ma-obsess na pagdebatehan yan. Gamitin natin ang oras natin na produktibo," Angara said.

"Siyempre, importante na 'wag natin kalimutan ang leksyon, pero kahit papaano pag-usapan natin ang kasalukuyang problema," he added. — Margaret Claire Layug/MDM, GMA News
