Why would women take advice from womanizer, misogynist? Gabriela says of Duterte

The Gabriela Women's Party on Sunday slammed President Rodrigo Duterte for saying that women should stay away from priests.

"Why would women take an advice from a self-confessed womanizer and serial misogynist?" Gabriela Women's Party Representative Emmi De Jesus and Arlene Brosas said in a statement.

"The macho-fascist president would be the last person who could give decent advice on how women can stay away from or fight abuse," they added.

In a speech during a ceremony in Sagay, Negros Occidental on Friday, Duterte said women should not come near priests in light of recent sex abuse allegations he threw against them.

"The women should refrain from going near the priests because when you are near him, he will just smell the scent of your body. And if he corners you in the church, patay ka, he will court you. Do you know why? It’s because he is a man," Duterte said.

But in making such statement, Duterte was only sparking anger between women and the Catholic Church, the Gabriela lawmakers said, when they both are finding common ground to make the current administration accountable for its supposed crimes.

"Gabriela has never ceased to make perpetrators of abuse accountable whether they come from the ranks of the Church, police and military personnel or government officials—including the President himself," they said.
