DOH: Number of firecracker-related injuries rises to 54


The number of firecracker-related injuries since the Department of Health started recording such cases on December 21 has risen to 54.

As of 5:59 a.m. on Monday, December 30, eight new cases were reported by 61 sentinel hospitals of the DOH.

The latest case requiring amputation involved a 13-year-old male who was injured by an illegal firecracker called “cylinder" in Aliaga, Nueva Ecija

The latest count of firecracker-related injuries is eight percent higher compared to the same period in 2018, but still 62% lower than the five-year average of 142 cases.

The DOH said half of the cases were due to illegal firecrackers with piccolo and boga being the leading causes of injury.

Of the 54 reported cases, 21 were from the Metro Manila while the rest were recorded in Region VII (6 cases), Region I (6 cases), Region II (4 cases), CALABARZON (4 cases), Region V (4 cases), Region VI (3 cases), Region XII (3 cases), and Regions III, XI, and MIMAROPA (1 case each). —NB, GMA News
