Briones dreams of providing laptops to students for distance learning

Secretary Leonor Briones said Thursday the Department of Education (DepEd) wants to provide laptops and computers to students for distance learning as face-to-face classes will be limited due to COVID-19 pandemic.

“Alam natin wala silang laptop at desktop. Ang dream natin tayo ang mag-provide ng laptop, desktop,” Briones said in a public briefing as she discussed the implementation of distance learning.

In the same briefing, Education Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said the department is realigning its budget amid adjustments to implement alternative approach of delivering education.

“Nagrere-budget pa kami ngayon kung paano matutustusan ‘yung pag-convert noong materyales ng mga bata na angkop sa silid-aralan, face-to-face learning into, halimbawa, self-learning modules,” he said.

“Kung television, alam mo naman na kapag TV, kailangan pang may production work doon para ma-convert sa television-based instructions,” Malaluan said.

To have additional resources, Malaluan said the DepEd will be working with non-government organizations and the private sector.

“Sa pakikipag-usap din natin sa iba’t-ibang partners…para tignan natin, bukod doon sa mga resources ng gobyerno, ay madagdagan din natin with non-government partners and private sector partners ang ating resources,” he said.

“Para masigurong hindi magiging pabigat doon sa ating mga mag-aaral at saka sa kanilang pamilya ‘yung paglahok dito sa panibagong paraan ng paghahatid ng leksyon,” he added.

The DepEd has been establishing other ways to deliver education to students through self-learning modules, broadcast media, and the internet.

A survey will be conducted on students and parents about their condition and capability to determine what available learning modalities will fit them, according to DepEd.

The reopening of classes is scheduled on August 24 without the physical attendance of students in schools. —AOL, GMA News
