DFA suspends passport operations in Metro Manila, other MECQ areas

By MICHAELA DEL CALLAR

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Monday announced that its passport and consular services in all areas under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ), including Metro Manila, are suspended.

President Rodrigo Duterte has placed the capital and the provinces of Bulacan, Laguna, Cavite, and Rizal back under MECQ from August 4 to August 18 following appeals from the health sector to enforce a stricter quarantine due to the rapid increase of COVID-19 infections.

The DFA said its Office of Consular Affairs in Aseana Parañaque City, all consular offices in Metro Manila, and in Malolos, Dasmarinas, Laguna and Antipolo will temporarily halt their operations during this period.

"Passport applicants who were affected by the MECQ declaration are reminded that there is no need to reschedule or cancel their confirmed appointments," the DFA said.

Applicants with confirmed appointments during these dates will be accommodated beginning August 19 until September 30, 2020, it said.

Those seeking Authentication, Civil Registration, and other consular services will likewise be accommodated on the same dates.

"The DFA also reminds the public that due to logistical limitations in light of the MECQ, there may be some delays in the production, delivery, and availability of passports nationwide, and at our Philippine Embassies and Consulates General until the MECQ period ends and our logistics partners’ operations are stabilized. Passport applicants are advised to prepare contingencies for their travel plans," the DFA said.

Those with questions or emergencies are advised to get in touch with the consular office where their appointment was scheduled.

"The DFA prioritizes the safety of the public and of its personnel, and appreciates the public’s continued patience and understanding as we adjust to the new normal in light of the COVID-19 pandemic," the DFA said. —KBK, GMA News
