Amid calls for month-long ECQ, livelihood should be considered — PCP exec

Amid calls to implement month-long enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in Metro Manila, the Philippine College of Physicians (PCP) president reminded that livelihood should be considered.

Interviewed on GMA Network’s Unang Hirit on Tuesday, PCP president Dr. Mario Panaligan pointed out that surviving the pandemic would also be hard for people who will lose their livelihood.

“Siyempre, buhay ng tao ang importante. Pero siyempre, naiintindihan naman natin 'yung kabuhayan naman. Mahirap naman talagang mabuhay kung wala ring hanapbuhay,” Panaligan said.

According to Panaligan, the PCP had some dialogues with the business sector about the implementation of quarantine restrictions.

“Kailangan nating tugunan kung ano ‘yung kailangan matugunan agad pero  huwag natin kalimutan na dapat hindi pa rin mawawala ang pinagkakabuhayan ng maraming tao,” he added.

Metro Manila is currently under modified ECQ. Panaligan pointed out that the measure has less impact on livelihood because some businesses are still allowed to operate.

For Panaligan, whatever quarantine restrictions are in place, the public and the government should remain cautious to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Kahit naman sabihin natin na wala na MECQ , GCQ (general community quarantine) na, kung magiging pabaya naman tayo,  so babalik at babalik ‘yung dami ng nagkakasakit,” he said.

On Monday, experts from the University of the Philippines (UP) recommended a month-long ECQ for Metro Manila to further slow the spread of COVID-19.

Earlier, former special adviser to the National Task Force Against COVID-19 Dr. Tony Leachon suggested two weeks of ECQ and another two weeks of MECQ for Metro Manila. — Joviland Rita/RSJ, GMA News
