DepEd: No policy yet on 'no failing mark' amid pandemic

The Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday said it does not have any policy yet regarding some lawmakers' suggestions for teachers not to give failing grades to students during the course of distance learning.

"Wala pa kaming definitive policy on that na todo pasa lahat ang ating mga eskwela. Hindi pa tayo dumating sa stage na 'yan dahil ang gusto nating ma-establish, 'yung continuity ng education para sa ating mga bata," Education Secretary Leonor Briones said during a Palace briefing.

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri and Senator Bong Go made the proposal to give all students passing mark so as to reduce the stress and pressure among the youth amid the global pandemic.

Meanwhile, Education Assistant Secretary Alma Torio said the DepEd is also preparing interim guidelines for the assessment of learners' progress in the upcoming school year.

"Ang mahalaga po, kung anuman ang policy natin sa assessment ay mapapakita nito ang holistic assessment and authentic assessment na ginagawa ng mga bata," she said.

"Kino-consider pa rin po namin 'yung natutunan nila based  sa performance standards at saka sa mga written output ng mga bata," she added.

The interim guidelines will be released after the consultation among regional directors is completed, according to Torio. —LBG, GMA News
