PHLPost welcomes bill seeking to allow elderly to vote by mail

The Philippine Postal Corporation (PHLPost) on Friday welcomed the proposal in Congress to allow senior citizens to vote by mail.

Maximo Sta. Maria III, PHLPost officer-in-charge and Assistant Postmaster General for Marketing and Management Support Services, said they are ready to work with other government agencies such as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in case it happens.

“In fact, nagawa na po namin ito during the absentee voting wherein iyong mga ating kababayan abroad ay bumuboto sa kanilang mga embassies at ipinapadala po dito,” he said at the Laging Handa briefing.

Filed by Marikina City Representative Stella Quimbo last month, House Bill 7572 seeks to authorize the Comelec to allow postal voting for voters who are 60 years or older if it deems necessary.

She said senior citizens must be allowed to cast their ballots at the comfort of their homes to ensure their health and safety with or without an outbreak of disease like COVID-19.

“We welcome po iyong panukalang batas na gawin iyong mail voting na tinatawag para maserbisyuhan iyong ating senior citizens and indigenous communities,” Sta. Maria said.
