Metro Manila mayors recommend GCQ until Dec. 31, 2020

Metro Manila mayors are one in recommending to the national government that the National Capital Region remain under general community quarantine (GCQ) until the end of 2020, a Balitanghali report said Monday.

This according to them is to prevent a possible surge in the number of COVID-19 cases during the holiday season, which is usually marked by festivities and gatherings.

The same is also the recommendation of the OCTA Research Group.

The mayors came up with the recommendation following the meeting of the Metro Manila Council (MMC) on Sunday.

President Rodrigo Duterte is expected to announce new quarantine classifications on Monday night after a meeting with the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19.

Duterte placed the NCR and six other areas under GCQ from November 1 to 30 to further prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Parañaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez, who chairs the MMC, said each local government unit will come up with guidelines regarding caroling, which the Department of Health said should be banned to avoid possible transmission of COVID-19.

The Balitanghali report said children 15 years and below have been recommended to be allowed outdoors as long as they are accompanied by an adult.

Curfew will also be shortened to 12 midnight to 3 a.m. to allow devotees to attend the traditional Simbang Gabi.

In a Dobol B sa News TV interview, Olivarez said the MMC is hoping that Metro Manila could be placed under modified GCQ by the start of 2021.

He said this would still depend on the number of COVID-19 infections in December.

"Ganoon ang direksyon pero titingnan pa rin po natin 'yung datos na manggagaling sa DOH. Kung magtutuloy-tuloy po na hindi tayo magkakaroon ng spike, most probably mag-MGCQ po tayo," Olivarez said.—with reports from Anna Felicia Bajo/AOL/KBK, GMA News
