DOH: Use of face shields and masks vs. COVID-19 backed by science

The mandatory use of face shield is science-based, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said on Wednesday.

Duque made the remark amid criticisms of the Inter-Agency Task Force's rule on making face shields on top of face masks mandatory for persons leaving their homes.

Previously, face shields were only required when inside enclosed spaces such as malls.

“We are guided by science, evidence, experts. Malinaw ang sinabi nila na pag gumamit ng face mask, face shield at may one meter physical distancing, there is 99% reduction of risk,” Duque said in an online forum.

“Huwag tayo mapagod kasi ang COVID-19 hindi marunong mapagod. Hindi nagbabakasyon ang COVID-19,” he added.

Duque said defying minimum health standards was very dangerous.

“Kapag hindi po tayo sumunod sa minimum health standards, mamimiligro po ang ating pamilya,” Duque said.

Duque said  the COVID-19 daily attack rate and reproduction rate in 12 cities in Metro Manila already reached more than one.

This news comes eight days before Christmas, a time that most Filipinos spend with extended family and friends.

The Health department has already called on the public to limit Christmas festivities within family immediate members residing in the same house and refrain from singing parties with a videoke to prevent a surge of COVID-19 cases. -NB, GMA News
