Philippines logs 13,177 new cases, active tally nears 100k

The Philippines on Friday reported 13,177 new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) cases, the highest daily infections reported since April 2 when over 15,000 new cases were logged.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), the new infections also pushed the country’s active cases to 96,395, marking the first time that active cases surpassed 90,000 since April 24.

The new daily cases brought the nationwide tally to 1,713,302. Four laboratories failed to submit data on time.

Of this, 95.8% are mild, 1% are asymptomatic, 1.4% are severe, and 0.8% are in critical condition.

The DOH also announced that total recoveries climbed to 1,587,069 after 4,322 more patients recovered from the illness.

Meanwhile, 299 new fatalities brought the death toll to 29,838, also the highest since April 9.

A total of 414 duplicate cases were also removed from the total case count.

“Moreover, 10 cases previously tagged as recoveries have been validated to be active cases, and 175 cases that were previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation,” the DOH said.

Data from the DOH showed that 66% of the intensive care unit beds nationwide are in use while 51% of the mechanical ventilators are occupied.

In the National Capital Region (NCR), 60% of the ICU beds are being utilized by patients while 54% of the mechanical ventilators are in use.

The DOH earlier said 11 areas in NCR have been placed under the highest alert level for COVID-19 due to rising infections and hospital bed utilization. —NB, GMA News
