President Rodrigo Duterte lauded the bravery of the late hero Andres Bonifacio on the latter's 158th birth anniversary on Tuesday, saying honoring the past will lead to stronger nationhood.

"May this event be a constant reminder of the invaluable contribution and selfless sacrifice of our heroes, especially Gat Andres in paving the way for the liberty and independence that we enjoy today," Duterte said during his speech at the Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan City.

"Remembering the heroism of our gallant forebear Bonifacio provided the sense of hope, determination and optimism for today’s generation of Filipinos, especially as we surmount difficult challenges in our time including the COVID-19 pandemic," he added.

The event also marked the opening of the newly restored El Deposito Underground Reservoir and the new diorama exhibit at the Museo ng Katipunan which showcases the historical Battle of San Juan del Monte.

"Let me thank the National Historical Commission of the Philippines for undertaking the restoration and the rehabilitation of these historical and cultural landmarks. Remembering historical events such as these are vital to enriching our understanding and appreciation for our nation’s culture," Duterte said.

The President offered a wreath during the solemn occasion and conferred the posthumous Order of Lapu-Lapu with the Rank of Magalong to Bonifacio.

The great granddaughter of the hero, Buena Grace Distrito Casanova, personally received the award.

Cabinet Secretary and acting presidential spokesperson Secretary Karlo Alexei Nograles, San Juan City Mayor Francisco Javier Zamora, and National Historical Commission of the Philippines Chairperson Dr. Rene Escalante were also present during the event. —KG, GMA News
