Vice President Leni Robredo on Tuesday said the use of face shields should be based on science, amid the government's plan to reimpose the policy mandating them.

"Ano ba 'yong sinasabi halimbawa ng [World Health Organization]? Sinabi ng WHO, hindi nire-recommend na gawing mandatory siya, so sa akin, anuman ang desisyon, kailangan naka-base sa ano ba 'yong pagtingin ng experts tungkol dito," she told reporters.

[What does WHO say about it? WHO did not recommend their mandatory use. For me, the decision should be based on experts' opinion.]

WHO representative to the Philippines Dr. Rabindra Abeyasinghe said there is no need for the mandatory use of face shields

even amid the possible entry of the more transmissible Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

Earlier, the government said the use of face shields on top of face masks is not mandatory in areas under Alert Levels 1, 2 and 3, unless indoor establishments require it.

However, National Task Force Against COVID-19 chief implementer and vaccine czar Carlito Galvez Jr. and Health Secretary Francisco Duque III expressed support for bringing back the face shield mandate amid the threat of the Omicron variant. — BM, GMA News
