President Rodrigo Duterte appointed John Henry Du Naga as Commissioner of the National Privacy Commission (NPC) for a term of three years, Malacañang said Friday.

Acting presidential spokesperson Karlo Nograles said that the President signed Naga's appointment papers last December 14.

"We wish Mr. Naga success as we are confident that his years of professional experience in the Department of Information and Communications Technology and the NPC will contribute to our goal of a competitive, knowledge-based and innovative nation where the flow of information remains free while upholding people’s right to privacy and data protection," Nograles said.

Before being named NPC Commissioner, Naga, a lawyer, also served as Deputy NPC Commissioner.

Based on his information page on the NPC website, Naga was appointed by President Duterte as Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) Assistant Secretary in September 2016.

Then DICT Acting Secretary Eliseo Rio subsequently assigned Naga as his Chief-of-Staff and was appointed as the Undersecretary for Management and Operations in June 2018.

"As the Undersecretary, he is responsible for the overall internal management of the Department," Naga's profile read.

By February 2019, Naga was also designated to head the Development and Innovations cluster of the DICT that is in charge of implementing the National Broadband Plan, National Government Portal, the Philippine Identification System (PhilSys), among others.

Before his DICT stint, Naga served as a Provincial Board Member for two terms in the Province of Masbate and previously practiced law and handled labor, telecommunication, and corporation cases. — DVM, GMA News
