UN releases $12-million aid to Odette-affected areas

The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (UNCERF) has released $12 million in humanitarian assistance to help in the recovery of communities affected by Typhoon Odette.

“I am releasing $12 million from @UNCERF to help deliver urgent humanitarian assistance to support the Government-led response to Super #TyphoonRai (#OdettePH) in the #Philippines,” UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said in a Twitter post on Friday.

UN country team coordinator in the Philippines Gustavo Gonzales welcomed the relief assistance, saying it will support the recovery efforts of the typhoon victims.

Earlier, the European Union (EU) also announced that it would allocate €2.83 million or P160.69 million worth of humanitarian assistance to areas severely battered by Odette in the Philippines.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday said the death toll due to Typhoon Odette has climbed to 326.

The agency reported a total of 343 cities and municipalities were placed under state of calamity due to the impact of Odette.—LDF, GMA News
