PNP COVID-19 death toll now at 126

The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Wednesday reported a new fatality due to COVID-19 among its personnel, bringing the death toll to 126.

This is the first reported death in PNP since November 9, 2021.

In a statement, the PNP described the new fatality as a 38-year old policeman from Nueva Ecija who was fully vaccinated but immunocompromised with high comorbidity.

Quoting his wife, the PNP said the police officer, who was under a work-from-home arrangement, was undergoing dialysis due to chronic kidney disease (CKD).

On January 13, PNP chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said the cop lost consciousness on the way to the hospital for a scheduled dialysis.

He was rushed to Nueva Ecija Medical Center where he was diagnosed suffering a stroke and declared "brain dead," according to Carlos. Laboratory test results showed that he was positive for COVID-19.

On January 14, he passed away due to acute respiratory failure, pneumonia and CKD.

"I would like to extend my condolences to the bereaved family of our police officer and assure them that we will give all the assistance they needed," Carlos said.

Based on the PNP data, a total of 46,291 COVID-19 cases have been reported in the police organization with 323 new infections.

The PNP said 42,550 have already recovered while 3,615 are still active cases.

According to the PNP, 217,034 (96.33%) of its personnel have already received their second dose of COVID-19 vaccine while 7,173 (3.18%) are still awaiting their second dose.

Meanwhile, 1,107 (0.49%) of PNP personnel have yet to be vaccinated. —Joviland Rita/KBK/RSJ, GMA News
