Inmate nearing end of sentence shot by escapees has died —BuCor

An inmate nearing the end of his sentence has passed away after being shot by other inmates who escaped the maximum security compound of the New Bilibd Prison, the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) said Wednesday.

On Monday, a total of four inmates escaped the compound, hurting a fellow inmate and several jail guards as the fugitives fired shots in the course of their escape.

The victims were brought to the Ospital ng Muntinlupa for treatment.

“Nag-expire po kahapon. Initially napaospital pa natin. Kahapon nag-expire na po” (He expired yesterday in the hospital), BuCor spokesman Gabriel Chaclag told Super Radyo dzBB.

Chaclag said the inmate was shot after he refused to open the gate.

“‘Yung isa pa nga po naging biktima sa pagtakas nila, binaril nila ‘yung isang preso na ayaw buksan ‘yung gate. Alam nilang kasamahan nilang preso ‘yun pero binaril pa rin nila,” he said.

(One became a victim while they were escaping, they shot the inmate who refused to open the gate. They knew he was a fellow inmate but they still shot him.)

“‘Yun ay malapit na sanang lalaya (he was about to be released),” he added.

Meanwhile, Chaclag said the two injured personnel are now in stable condition while two others are undergoing observation.

“Dalawa na po ‘yung na discharge. Under observation pa rin ‘yung dalawa. And during recovery operations ay nabaril din po ‘yung kasamahan natin sa tiyan pero stable na rin po siya, out of danger na rin po,” he said.

Two escaped inmates, Pacifico Adlawan and Arwin Bio, were killed during manhunt operations after they allegedly fired at arresting authorities.

Meanwhile, the other two escapees -- Chris Ablas and Drakilou Falcon -- have remained at large.

According to Chaclag, the building of the inmates was renovated recently.

“May mga ibang factor lang na doon tayo nagkulang siguro sa physical security kasi nagkaroon ng renovation sa building na yun recently. May mga security feature pa na dapat mailagay doon at siguro yun ang pinagsalamantalahan ng mga tumakas na ito,” he said

(There are factors that we have lacked such as physical security because that building was renovated recently. There are security features that should have been added. Maybe the inmates took advantage of that.)

Chaclag said the BuCor has coordinated with fugitives' relatives or friends.

“Nagbigay naman ng assurance na magsasabi rin sila pero syempre… ano pa rin yun hanggat hindi nila ginagawa yun remains as pag-uusap lang,” he said.

(The relatives gave assurances that they will tell us. Of course, as long as they still haven’t done so, it remains as just talk.)

“Hinihikayat po namin sila na 'wag nila kunsintihin itong dalawa na ito. Mas mabauti po sumuko po sila para magkaroon ng pag-asa baka sakali pa sila makapagbagong-buhay,” he added.
