Vice presidential aspirant Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza on Wednesday criticized former senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. after the presidential aspirant said he was in favor of legalizing abortion in the country for women who were victims of rape and incest.

In a Facebook live, Atienza said abortion should not be legalized in the country because it takes a human life.

"Anybody aspiring to be president of any land... tapos sasabihin niya na he's in favor of abortion, he doesn't seem to know what he is talking about," Atienza said.

"Abortion, no matter what would you want to call it, end or termination of pregnancy, it's killing the baby," he added.

Atienza said a baby was a blessing from God.

He then hit Marcos for not valuing the life of the baby.

"Your position is so distorted, it has no value at all. It doesn't value the life of the baby," Atienza said.

On Tuesday, Marcos said legal abortion should be allowed for "very severe cases."

Marcos explained it was important to distinguish the conditions when women can resort to legal abortion as an option "so that we don't get stuck in the moral issue of playing god on when life begins."

Abortion is still prohibited in the Philippines.

Individuals proven involved in inducing an abortion may be punished with up to six years of imprisonment. —NB, GMA News
