Philippines logs 1,038 new COVID-19 infections; active cases at 52,961

The Philippines on Sunday registered 1,038 new COVID-19 cases, raising the Philippines' total caseload to 3,661,049.

Active infections reached 52,961, of which 556 are asymptomatic; 47,910 are mild; 1,417 are severe; 298 are in critical condition.


Of the cases reported today, the DOH said 1,015 or 98% occurred within the recent 14 days from February 14 to 27.

The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were the National Capital Region with 227 or 22%, Region 6 with 129 or 13%, and Region 40A with 104 or 10%.

Total recoveries also rose to 3,551,687 after 1,999 more patients recovered from the illness.

The death toll climbed to 56,401 with 51 new fatalities.

Of the 47 deaths, the DOH said nine occurred in February 2022, two in January 2022, one in December 2021, eight in November 2021, three in October 2021, nine in September 2021, five in August 2021, six in July 2021, four in June 2021, one in May and February 2021, and two in January 2021 due to the late encoding of death information to its system.

Meanwhile, the country's positivity rate was at 5%. The total conducted COVID-19 tests were 25,313.

The DOH noted that nine duplicates were removed from the total case count, while 44 cases previously tagged as recoveries were reclassified as deaths after final validation.

The DOH said all laboratories were operational on February 25, while one lab was not able to submit their data.

The latest data from the DOH also showed that 26% of the country’s intensive care unit beds are utilized, while 13% of the mechanical ventilators are also in use.

In Metro Manila, 24% of the ICU beds are utilized, while 15% of the ventilators are in use. — DVM, GMA News
