Akbayan asks DOF to confiscate Marcos accounts to settle family's tax debt

The Akbayan party-list on Monday called on the Department of Finance (DOF) to confiscate the bank accounts of the Marcos Family should they refuse to settle their tax liabilities amounting to P203 billion.

In a report on 24 Oras, Akbayan said it sent a letter to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III saying it should take the payment from the accounts of Senator Imee Marcos, former Senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., Irene Marcos, and the family matriarch Imelda Marcos.

"Huwag po natin payagan na ang ordinaryong mamamayan may deadline pero ang Marcoses laging nakakalusot," Percy Cendaña, Akbayan Party-list nominee, said.

In 1991, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) assessed the estate tax liabilities of the former First family at P23 billion. It ballooned to P203 billion, however, due to interest and other penalties.

Finance Undersecretary Didith Tan, faced the party-list group as they trooped in front of the DOF office in Manila and assured them they would take "appropriate actions on the matter". — Sundy Locus/DVM, GMA News
