Comelec may name new gun ban panel chair on Wednesday — Garcia

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) may announce on Wednesday’s en banc session the replacement of Commissioner Socorro Inting as chairperson of the Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Concerns (CBFSC) after she stepped down from her post on Tuesday, Commissioner George Garcia said.

In a radio interview, Garcia said Inting’s resignation as CBFSC chair may be discussed in the en banc meeting later in the day, but they will see first if she could still be persuaded to retract her decision.

“Mamaya po pag-uusapan namin ‘yan at maaring mamaya rin po ay ating maa-announce kung sino ang hahalinhin kay Commissioner Inting o baka naman sakaling makumbinsi pa si Commissioner Inting din na huwag nang bitawan ang pagiging chairman ng committee,” he said.

(We will talk about that later and maybe later we will announce who will replace Commissioner Inting or maybe could still convince her not to resign as chairman of the committee.)

Inting sent a formal memorandum to the en banc on Tuesday, saying she is “irrevocably” resigning from her committee post

following the en banc’s decision to give Comelec Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan the authority to unilaterally grant gun exemptions and place areas under the poll body’s control in “meritorious and urgent cases.”

She said the move “essentially rendered futile or pointless the existence and functions of the CBSFC.”

Garcia said he was personally surprised by Inting’s decision as it was “unexpected.”

Despite Inting’s resignation, Garcia assured that it will not affect the ongoing implementation of the election gun ban.

“Wala naman po. Tuloy tuloy ‘yung pag-proseso natin. Tuloy tuloy ‘yung pag-release ng mga authority, so hindi naman naapektuhan ‘yun. Hanggang kahapon naman, gumagana, active, at andiyan ang ating Commissioner Socorro Inting, ‘yung chairman ng gun ban committee,” he said.

(We will continue the processes and the release of the authorities. They will not be affected. Until yesterday, our Commissioner Socorro Inting, the chairman of the gun ban committee, was there and working actively.)

When the election period started on January 9, all kinds of firearms with a license and permit to carry have since then not been allowed to be brought outside of the owner’s residence following the imposition of the Comelec gun ban. — RSJ, GMA News
