NGCP starts restoration work in areas affected by Agaton

The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) announced on Wednesday that restoration work has begun in areas hit by Tropical Depression Agaton.

Four steel towers, which are components of the Ormoc-Maasin 138kV line, located in Baybay, Leyte, were damaged by a landslide caused by the tropical cyclone.

The NCGP said it has deployed 13 line gangs or over 100 line personnel to conduct clearing and simultaneous restoration work on three tower sites, while one tower site remains inaccessible due to continued rain and unstable terrain.

The country's power grid operator will also install Emergency Restoration Systems (ERS) to temporarily restore the isolated line and transmit any and all available power to the province of Bohol.

It targets the temporary restoration of the said line on April 18, depending on the weather situation.

“As we wait for weather conditions to improve, the company is simultaneously preparing all resources needed to expedite restoration works, especially once we assess the remaining area,” the NGCP said in a statement.

“We are coordinating with concerned local government units and other relevant entities for the assistance needed. We ask the public’s cooperation and understanding as well in order to complete restoration works at the soonest possible time,” it added.

At least 43 people have been killed by Agaton, which dissipated on Wednesday morning, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council. —VBL, GMA News
