Pacquiao to push for proposed SIM card registration law

By JAMIL SANTOS,GMA News

Presidential candidate Senator Manny Pacquiao on Friday vowed to push for the passage of the proposed SIM Card Registration Act, which was recently vetoed by President Rodrigo Duterte.

At the PiliPinas forum by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) and Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP), Pacquiao laid out his plans to fight disinformation in the age of social media.

"Higpitan ang social media... Hindi naman kontrolin, pero higpitan. Malaya pa rin. Palakasin natin yung Cybercrime Law at siguraduhin na i-push natin yung registration ng SIM card na na-veto ng Pangulo," he said.

(I propose tight monitoring on social media... Not to control, but to tighten. The netizens are still free to express their opinions. Let us strengthen the Cybercrime Law and ensure that we push the registration of SIM cards, which was vetoed by the President.)

"Importante talaga 'yan, kasi kailangan natin ng identity na tunay nitong account na ito. Hindi tayo nakatira sa ibang planeta, andito tayo sa bansa natin kaya kailangan ma-identify natin kung sino ba ang kausap natin. Siya ba ito o hindi?" Pacquiao added.

(Close monitoring is really important, because we need to know if the identity of an account is real. We do not live on another planet, we are here in our country so we need to identify who we are talking to.)

Under his administration, Pacquiao would require those opening a social media account to undergo face recognition.

At the same time, Pacquiao vowed to suppress the alleged trolls.

"Sisiguraduhin natin, 'yung mga namba-bash diyan sa social media, 'yung mga trolls diyan. Panahon na para sugpuin silang lahat (We will ensure, that bashers on social media, the trolls out there, it is time to suppress them all)." —LBG, GMA News
