What next admin needs to take on Philippines' problems, according to expert

By GMA News

The next administration needs to first regain the public's trust to solve the country’s current problems, Ateneo School of Government (ASOG) Dean Dr. Ronaldo U. Mendoza has said.

“Ang dami nating kailangang gawin sa Pilipinas and yet, ang laki ng promise natin bilang bansa rin. Ang pondo natin diyan bilang mga Pilipino ay tiwala, at sana 'yan ang i-prioritize ng next administration,” said Mendoza in the latest episode of The Mangahas Interviews.

(We have a lot of things to do for the Philippines and yet, we have a lot of promises too. What we need for that is trust and I wish the next administration will prioritize that.

“To me, that comes with open government, transparency, a very strong respect for media, and a very strong respect for institutions,” he added.

The Philippines is reeling from the ill effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, growing debt, and poverty, Mendoza said.

He urged the appointment of Cabinet officials based on credentials and not by loyalty, saying it was one way to bring back Filipinos’ confidence in the government.

“Lagyan ng mga mahuhusay at matitinong appointees. Wag just appointments by loyalty. Then babalik ang trust natin,” he said.
