Marcos camp on generating new revenues: Let’s wait for Bongbong to officially assume post

By ANNA FELICIA BAJO,GMA News

Wait for the official assumption into office by presumptive president Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr.

This was the reply of Marcos' spokesperson, Attorney Vic Rodriguez when asked on Tuesday how will the Philippine government generate new revenues.

Earlier, House ways and means committee chairperson Joey Salceda said the incoming administration needs around P326 billion in new revenues

to cover for the debts incurred by the Duterte administration.

But at a press briefing, Rodriguez said: "As to how we’re gonna raise it, I’m sure you understand that the present dispensation is still being led by President [Rodrigo] Duterte, so in all due respect and deference to the President, to which we fully support, eh hintayin na lang muna ninyo ang official assumption of president Bongbong as president."

"But for now let’s support the current administration led by President Duterte," he added.

Earlier, Rodriguez said Marcos, being an "old school," seems to be more concerned on the ill-effects of e-sabong on families, instead of the revenues it could give to the government.

Salceda has said "budget cuts aren't a very good option if you want to sustain COVID-19 growth, and of course, borrowing more to cover past borrowings is a downward spiral to fiscal hell."

Salceda further noted that the Philippine government should show creditors that the country is in good fiscal standing, adding that a tax policy reform is the best option.

Meanwhile, when asked if the Marcos administration will adopt the Duterte economic team, Rodriguez said: "Let me put it this way, with the overwhelming mandate, allow us to let president-elect Bongbong Marcos have his own government and his own governance."

"While we respect the many good people that are serving in the present administration, I think we’ll just give him enough space to define his own government and have his own governance," he added. — RSJ, GMA News
