The Philippines has made history during the May 9 national and local elections after 83%  or 55,549,791 of the 65,745,512 registered voters cast their ballots in Eleksyon 2022, the highest turn-out in the automated election history in the country.

This was disclosed by Commission on Elections (Comelec) Education and Information Division Director James Jimenez in a tweet Wednesday.

“Voter turnout for the 2022 National and Local Elections stands at 83% —the highest turnout for automated elections in Philippine history,” Jimenez said in a tweet.

During his speech at the proclamation of winning senators Wednesday, Comelec chairman Saidamen Pangarungan acknowledged the Filipinos who waited patiently in line during the May 9 elections to ensure they will exercise their right to suffrage.

Pangarungan said Eleksyon 2022 has “highest voter turnouts in recent history.”

“The glory does not belong solely to the winners of the elections. It also belongs to the voters who stood patiently in line to cast their votes in an election with one of the highest voter turnouts in recent history,” Pangarungan said.

The 83% voter turnout in Eleksyon 2022 surpassed the 81.95% rate during the 2016 presidential elections.

In 2016, the Philippines saw the largest turnout since 1986 with 44,549,848 of 54,363,844 voters participating in the elections.—LDF, GMA News
