Philippines' active COVID-19 tally at 2,235 as 149 new cases reported

The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday logged 149 new COVID-19 cases, increasing the nationwide tally to 3,689,281.

According to the DOH’s latest data, the country’s active case count stood at 2,235. No new COVID-19 deaths were recorded in the last three days.

A total of 3,626,591 patients recovered from the viral disease.

The regions with the most new cases in the recent two weeks were the National Capital Region with 951, followed by Region 4-A with 316, and Region 3 with 258.

The Health department said at least 17,657 individuals were tested, while 325 testing labs submitted data on May 23.

It noted that the bed occupancy in the country was 16.5%, with 5,119 beds occupied, while 25,963 vacant.

Independent monitoring group OCTA Research earlier said that COVID-19 reproduction number in the National Capital Region slightly increased to 1.05.

The reproduction number refers to the number of people infected by one case. A reproduction number that is below 1 indicates that the transmission of the virus is slowing down.

Despite the slight increase, OCTA Research fellow Guido David said this does not necessarily mean cases will surge.

However, he also noted that the last two periods the reproduction number increased to more than 1 was during the start of the surges caused by the more transmissible Omicron and Delta variants.

The Philippines and most of its regions remain under the minimal risk case classification against COVID-19 despite the reported local transmission of the Omicron subvariant BA.2.12.1, the DOH said.—LDF, GMA News
