Comelec: ‘Relatively high turnout’ on resumption of voter registration

There was a "relatively high" turnout of applicants on the first day of the resumption of voter registration across the country, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) said Monday.

In a Viber message, acting Comelec spokesperson Rex Laudiangco told reporters that based on initial assessment reports from the poll body's field offices, the first day voter’s registration today was also "peaceful and orderly."

Initial reports nationwide, including those from the National Capital Region, the Cordillera Administrative Region, Regions 2, 3, 4A, 5, 6, 12 and the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao "showed orderly queues in City and Municipal Election Officers’ Offices, with most applicants belonging to the new members of the Katipunan ng Kabataan-Sangguniang Kabataan, aged 15 to 17 years old."

Under Comelec Resolution 10798, all field offices have to submit daily reports not later than 7:00 p.m. and all regions must submit their reports accordingly to the Election and Barangay Affairs Department of the poll body.

Earlier, the Comelec announced that the continuing voter registration would be held from July 4 to 23, 2022.

The registration will run from Mondays to Saturdays, including holidays, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in all Comelec City and Municipal Offices with satellite and off-site registrations being held with due notice to facilitate more applications.

Laudiangco previously explained that the continuing voter's registration will be held in less than a month under Republic Act 8189 or the Continuing Voter's Registration Act prohibits voter registration within 120 days prior to the elections.

The next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) is set for December 5, 2022.

The acting Comelec spokesperson said there are post-registration activities and requirements that the poll body has to process before the next elections. — BM, GMA News
