GMA Kapuso Foundation to build 3 new classrooms in Odette-hit Southern Leyte

By GMA News

Three new classrooms will be built in Barangay New Malangza, Liloan, Southern Leyte, which was immensely affected by Typhoon Odette late last year.

According to a “24 Oras” report Tuesday, the New Malangza Elementary School was built in 2006 after a landslide. It helped numerous students’ dreams go alive again after the calamity.

Among the beneficiaries were Kimberly Baldrez and Lyka Marie Bactasa who are now licensed teachers.

“Ang GMA Kapuso school po ang naging tulay po para maabot ko po yung pangarap ko,” Kimberly said.

Mel Tiangco herself visited the area when the school was still being built. Now that new classrooms will be opened, she and the whole GMA Kapuso Foundation team are hopeful.

“Natutuwa ako na magpapatuloy ang legacy ng GMA Kapuso Foundation dito sa Liloan, Leyte kasi talagang dumapa sila noong bagyong Odette,” said Rikki Escudero-Catibog, the foundation’s EVP/COO.

The groundbreaking ceremony was held last July 7. Senior project engineer Edgar Eniego said the team would ensure that the new rooms would withstand possible calamities.

“Mas pinatibay natin dahil unang-una nga, merong mandate ang DepEd na patibayin yung ginagawang classrooms sa up to 300 kilometer per hour wind speed and of course, earthquake na 8.0 intensity.”

The GMA Kapuso Foundation is accepting donations through bank deposits, Cebuana Lhuillier, Shopee, GCash, PayMaya, Zalora, MegaMart, Globe Rewards, Metrobank credit card, and Lazada.
