92 robbery cases filed vs. cops done over a 6-year period, PNP clarifies

Ninety-two cases of robbery have been filed against police personnel from July 1, 2016 to July 31, 2022, the Philippine National Police (PNP) clarified on Monday.

PNP chief Police General Rodolfo Azurin issued the remark as he sought to correct a report that stated that the cases were all filed in July 2022.

"To set the record straight, it is true that the PNP has filed 92 cases of robbery against police personnel. However, these 92 cases were filed over a 6-year period from July 1, 2016 to July 31, 2022," Azurin said at a press conference.

"In the interest of accuracy in news reporting, we would like to correct this error lest it becomes a media fact forever," he added.

Meanwhile, Azurin said 23,653 police personnel were deployed for law enforcement and public safety duties in the vicinity of schools and university campuses on the resumption of classes.

Of this, he said 2,122 personnel were deployed in  Metro Manila’s University Belt Area.

"Although we do not foresee any serious security concern with the opening of classes, PNP Units are constantly on the lookout for the perennial peace and order issues associated with the occasion such as traffic congestion, stranded commuters, crowding, non-observance of public health standards, street crime, fraternity or gang violence, and campus infiltration by communist front organizations," he said.

Meanwhile, he said that from July 1 to August 20, the PNP arrested 8,934 suspects in the drug trade, nabbed 805 kgs of shabu, 83.33 kgs of marijuana and other illegal substances, and destroyed 34 marijuana farms estimated to be worth P5.8 billion. — Joahna Lei Casilao/RSJ, GMA News
